Hello world! As a member that is new of weblog team, I am so excited to fairly share numerous of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. once I talk to my buddies and household about my job, they frequently ask questions like ‘what do you do on an everyday basis?’ or ‘do you have to work in the summer?’ i am hoping that through my additions that are monthly this web log, you are going to get a better notion of what we do every single day as admission counselors.
Therefore allow’s start with the current. This i woke up at the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA morning. My visit that is first began 7:45 am. That might sound early to some, reasonable to others, but I can inform you, this at 7:45 am, I was tired (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy. early morning) You see, my trip from Los Angeles was expected to reach Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (become exact.) But instead, due to a cockpit that is wet (I kid you not,) my journey was delayed three hours. Luckily, my very first school check out this morning constantly has coffee waiting for me, and I also was especially appreciative today (Thanks Sheila!) Although I usually give in regards to a 30 minute presentation to pupils once I visit, at this school it’s yet another structure which consists mostly of me responding to questions. Thankfully the learning students came prepared. They asked great questions and I also think we only stuttered a few times.
I’d a while to kill before my second visit and luckily found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. I stopped for many break fast and a coffee refill. In a world that is perfect arrive about 10 mins ahead of a visit, but usually I’m about 15 to 20 minutes early. Fortunately, my car’s atmosphere conditioning kept me cool while I ate my bagel and drank my latte. I was also able to chat with some counselors which is always a highlight of my day today. College counselors are always saturated in information about students, their schools, and usually life generally speaking. It reminds me of my high school times where I spent a complete lot of the time on my counselor’s couch.
How coffee that is many can you find in this picture?
My visit that is third today to a school i have never checked out before. There were about eight students present and one had been even wearing a USC t-shirt. This student, let us call him Brandon, said about his recent stop by at campus so we had a moment to gush over how USC that is pretty is. I enjoy sharing common USC experiences with pupils, especially when I’m away from home.
Finally, between my third and fourth see this morning, I happened to be in a position to grab a 6′ veggie pleasure as I drove to the next school that is high. Upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer, an excellent reminder of the relationships we continue to create at each school.
After my fifth and final visit today, we returned to my resort, debriefed my day in the shape of records and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch through to some work. My instinct that is first is to check my email. Oh look! I acquired a contact from Brandon thanking me for my check out and asking a question about something I talked about. Love when that occurs!
I am hoping to satisfy many of you as We continue my travels! If there’s anything else you wish to know about our experiences visiting your school that is high feel liberated to leave concerns into the remark section and I shall do my best to make contact with you quickly!
Mythbuster: I need to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice
The Myth: Attending college fairs, visits and tours will increase my chances of admission.
The Verdict: Not at USC.
Every late August/early September, there are 5 or so emails in my inbox each morning because of the topic ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have a similar format that is general. ‘Hello Jessica- simply wanted to tell you that I head to ABC High School, we play baseball and I also can’t wait to utilize to USC. I have always wished to be considered a pupil in the Marshall School of Business.’ Ok great, but just what am I supposed to state? Good fortune along with your baseball season? Every winter, I have similar emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me personally how their first semester went, they got the lead role in the spring musical, and that USC continues to be their first option. Awesome, but chances are I already saw your senior grades (or will soon) year.
At USC, we don’t monitor students’s interest outside regarding the actual application for admission decision purposes. Going to our programs is a wonderful method to find out more about USC, but going to an event or sending e-mails like those I described will not raise your chances of admission towards the university.
As admission counselors, it is true that individuals are your main contact while you have the admission process at USC so we are happy to assist you with any assist you to may require. However, pupils just benefit from reaching out to us if they have specific questions- especially questions to which they can not find the answer online. I believe pupils often confuse this role and make the assumption us and initiate a conversation in order to have a shot at admission that they HAVE to email.
So how do you show us which you’re enthusiastic about USC? in the place of spending your time emailing us with updates, it is in your best interest to make use of that point to operate on your reaction to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and exactly how you plan to pursue them at USC.’ You should talk about specific resources and opportunities you desire to take advantage of at shmoop pro USC. instead of emailing us your list of tasks, fill the activity Summary out completely. A thoughtful and carefully assembled application stands out more than an introduction email or an invite to coffee.
Keep in mind that some schools may track demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all students to reach out to them, while other people may expect students within the neighborhood to check out campus. The thought of demonstrated interest varies, if it is factored into an admission decision so you should always ask a school if and how they track interest and.
By the end of the day, we do desire to see that you are interested in USC and that you will be seriously considering being a student here. The way that is best for you really to articulate this interest is during your application.
